Femø
The Island
We live on a small island called Femø in the middle of Smålandshavet in Denmark. The island is peaceful and quiet with clean air, plenty of space, sandy beaches and starry skies. Femø citizens rejoice to be free from all the noise of modern society and our guests often comment on the ease of leaving their busy everyday lives behind as soon as they board the ferry.
Although the cultivated areas today are combined into larger units, the many living willow fences testify to the time when Femø’s lands were divided into narrow plots that spread out in fan form towards the coast. Such a well-preserved cultural-historical landscape is only rarely seen and is a bit of a distinctive feature of the island. With its hills, bogs and winding roads, the island offers many things to explore.
Femø the Fruit Basket
Femø is in some circles known as “the fruit basket” and we understand why. Around the island you will find traces of Femø’s old orchards and in the end of summer the island is extremely bountiful with plums, blackberries, pears and apples. There is even a local apple variety – the Femø Renette. The climate allows for more exotic trees such as figs, almonds and peaches. Femø is an island where the citizens help each other and love to share their produce so during the year is is possible to buy homemade marmelade, juice and other things.
