Silo and Tipi

The Silo

We have two landmarks at Issemosegaard that we are very proud of and hold very special meaning to us. One of them is the tall green silo that clearly distinguishes our place from the other farms on Femø.

We are not sure exactly when it was built, but from old pictures we can see that it is somewhere between 1949 and 1979. It is an old corn silo that speaks of a time where Issemosegaard was still in use as a proper farm and most likely owned a lot of the surrounding land as well. For the past years it has been standing empty and has been home to the many swallows who return to our farm every year and build their nests on the inside.

Most of us have dared to crawl on top of the silo at least once as the views from up there are absolutely stunning and you can see most of the island from up there. Due to safety reasons, however, we have now decided that the silo is only to be enjoyed from the ground.

The good thing is that the best part of the silo, at least in our opinion, is actually on the inside. The big open space allows for an absolutely amazing acoustic and brings the opportunity for breathtaking sounds. We have facilitated several acoustic mini concerts, sound journeys and singing sessions in there and we hope to create many more of these in the future. We dream of renovating the silo on the inside to create an even more magical space for music experiences in the future.

The Tipi

The second landmark that we hold very dear to our hearts is our tipi – MAYAH.

When the tipi came to us in 2018 she had already lived for many years in another place, but it seemed like she was meant to be a part of Issemosegaard. In order to extend her longevity we pack her down every autumn to keep her safe and warm during the rough Danish winters. When springtime arrives we get the whole team together to bring her back up, and in all ways this marks the beginning of spring and our entire summer season.

We do our best to honour the traditions from where the tipi comes and for us this is a very sacred space. Every year we gather as a tribe in the tipi for our annual general assembly and throughout summer this is where we facilitate all kinds of sessions and ceremonies. There is something very special about gathering in a circle in front of the element of fire and to honour sacred ancient traditions.
