Femø

The Island

We live on a small island called Femø in the middle of Smålandshavet in Denmark. The island is peaceful and quiet with clean air, plenty of space, sandy beaches and starry skies. Femø citizens rejoice to be free from all the noise of modern society and our guests often comment on the ease of leaving their busy everyday lives behind as soon as they board the ferry.

Although the cultivated areas today are combined into larger units, the many living willow fences testify to the time when Femø’s lands were divided into narrow plots that spread out in fan form towards the coast. Such a well-preserved cultural-historical landscape is only rarely seen and is a bit of a distinctive feature of the island. With its hills, bogs and winding roads, the island offers many things to explore.

Femø is in some circles known as “the fruit basket” and we understand why. Around the island you will find traces of Femø’s old orchards and in the end of summer the island is extremely bountiful with plums, blackberries, pears and apples. There is even a local apple variety – the Femø Renette. The climate allows for more exotic trees such as figs, almonds and peaches. Femø is an island where the citizens help each other and love to share their produce so during the year is is possible to buy homemade marmelade, juice and other things.

Walking around the Island

It is no secret that we are absolutely in love with Femø and everything the island has to offer. It is actually possible to walk along the coastline all the way around the island, and we try to do it several times a year. No matter if you walk as a group or on your own the scenic tour offers much time for reflection and connecting with nature. Depending on the weather conditions and how many breakes one might have, it usually takes around 3-5 hours to walk all the way around.

Even though Femø is a small island it offers such a different variety of nature, so when you do the entire walk it almost feels like you have been to many different places all in one day. One moment you will be walking on big boulders with wind coming from the sea and the next moment the water is completely still and you are surrounded by bounty beaches. You will come across big open fields, pine forest, cliffs and pink beautiful rocks.

Kayaking

If you are into kayaking then it is also possible to paddle around and enjoy the scenic island views from the seaside. In the summertime kayaks are available to rent on the island for a small fee and this activity we can also highly recommend – it’s a good workout too.
