ISSEMOSEGAARD
The House
Once upon of time two lovely souls dreamt of creating a retreat center somewhere in Denmark and in 2017 they came across this beautiful old house called Issemosegaard, surrounded by trees and corn fields and with beautiful sea views to three sides. The house stood alone and empty and was in desperate need of some care and attention. Even the land was so overgrown with blackberry bushes that it was impossible to get around and only a small part of the garden was clear.
The History of Issemosegaard
Issemosegaard was built with love in 1878 and surely has many stories to tell. For an extended amount of time it was a pig farm and you can still find traces of this around the land and in the barns. The green corn silo speaks of a time where the farm had much more land and a windmill foundation still stands in one corner of the land. In this corner you will also find a variety of different plum trees that are the remains of a big plum orchard.
Old pictures show that Issemosegaard used to be a quadrilateral farm, but unfortunately the two stable buildings burned down many years ago. Today the main house stands proud and shiny a long with a smaller building, the silo and the two big barns.
Help from Friends and Family
A lot has happened since we got the keys in 2017 and little by little we’re renovating and renewing the house and the land and making it habitable again. In the early stages of the project none of us actually lived here, so instead we would gather friends and family for Karma Weekends, where everyone would put their love and energy into the projects taking place.
It is important for us to highlight that we would not have been where we are today, if it had not been for the help we have received throughout the years. Friends and family have supported us with equipment, tools, time and working hands and for this we are forever grateful.
In 2018 we began renovating the rooms inside the house and in 2020 we got a new kitchen. Year after year we have worked to clear the blackberry bushes, which has slowly enabled us to actually get access to our land.
Dreams of the Future
Today we are a handful of souls fully dedicated to pouring love into this place. We have many dreams for the future of Issemosegaard and it is wonderful to see them unfold little by little. Living on an old farm like this is a lot of hard work and we have finally realised and understood that our dreams will unfold slowly over time.
We are once again upgrading the rooms one by one to make them even nicer and there are areas inside the house that need extensive renovations. Our barns also need the attention of loving strong hands if we wish to keep them alive and keeping up with the land around the house is ongoing work.
When we look back at all the changes that has taken place in the last couple of years we are filled with joy and gratitude and we are excited to see where we will be in many years from now.
We are truly honoured to be a part of the history of this house and to share it with all the generations that lived here before us.
